Bosch Dishwasher Repair: Error Codes and Common Problems

Bosch dishwashers are among the most reliable on the market, but when they do fail, understanding the error codes and common issues helps you get back on track quickly.

Bosch Dishwashers: Reliable but Not Immune to Problems

Bosch is consistently rated as one of the most reliable dishwasher brands, known for exceptionally quiet operation, efficient cleaning, and long service life. Bosch dishwashers are popular across the Inland Empire, found in everything from starter homes in Fontana to custom kitchens in Chino Hills. Their German engineering delivers years of trouble-free operation for most owners. But when a Bosch dishwasher does develop a problem, the sophisticated electronics and precision components require a technician who understands Bosch's specific systems.

At Sub-Zero Inland Empire, we service Bosch dishwashers regularly and are thoroughly familiar with their error code system, common failure points, and repair procedures. Here is our guide to the most frequent Bosch dishwasher issues and what they mean.

E15 Error: The Anti-Flood System

The E15 error code is one of the most common Bosch dishwasher complaints and indicates that water has been detected in the base pan of the unit, activating Bosch's AquaStop anti-flood protection system. When triggered, the dishwasher shuts down all water functions and displays the E15 code. The unit will not operate until the water in the base pan is addressed.

Common causes of E15 include a leaking door seal, a cracked sump or spray arm connection, a leaking water inlet valve, or a loose hose clamp inside the unit. In some cases, a single heavy-suds event caused by using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent can flood the base pan with foam. The hard water conditions in the Inland Empire can also contribute to E15 by corroding internal hose connections over time.

To address E15, first unplug the dishwasher and tilt it backward at about a 45-degree angle to allow water to flow from the base pan into the tub area. This may reset the float switch. However, if the E15 returns after running a cycle, there is an active leak that must be found and repaired. Our technicians remove the base cover, identify the leak source, and repair or replace the failing component. Simply draining the base pan without finding the leak will result in repeated E15 errors.

E24 Error: Drainage Problems

The E24 error code indicates that the dishwasher is not draining properly. You will typically find standing water in the bottom of the tub when this error appears. Drainage issues are the second most common Bosch repair we perform in the IE, and hard water is frequently a contributing factor.

Start with the basics: check the dishwasher's drain filter, located at the bottom of the tub. Bosch dishwashers have a multi-part filter system that traps food debris and must be cleaned regularly — we recommend weekly in households that use the dishwasher daily. A clogged filter is the number one cause of E24. Next, check the drain hose for kinks, especially where it connects to the garbage disposal or sink drain. Ensure the knockout plug in the disposal has been removed if the dishwasher was recently installed.

If the filter and hose are clear, the issue may be a failing drain pump. Mineral deposits from IE hard water can accumulate on the drain pump impeller, reducing its efficiency or jamming it entirely. Our technicians test the pump electrically and mechanically, clean mineral deposits when possible, or replace the pump when cleaning is insufficient.

E09 Error: Heating Element Failure

The E09 error code signals a problem with the dishwasher's heating system, which heats water during the wash cycle and provides drying heat at the end. When the heating element fails, the dishwasher may still run and spray water, but the water will not reach the temperature needed for proper sanitization and cleaning. You may notice dishes coming out with food residue, a cold interior at cycle end, or pooled water that would normally evaporate during the drying phase.

Bosch dishwashers use a flow-through heater rather than an exposed element in the tub, which is more efficient but also more susceptible to scale buildup in hard water areas. The mineral deposits insulate the heating element, reducing its ability to transfer heat to the water. Eventually, the element overheats and burns out. Our repair involves testing the heater for continuity, inspecting it for visible scale damage, and replacing it with a genuine Bosch component. We also check the temperature sensor (NTC) that works in conjunction with the heater, as a faulty sensor can incorrectly trigger an E09 code.

Door Latch and Closure Problems

Bosch dishwashers will not start a cycle unless the door is fully latched and the control detects a secure closure. Over time, the door latch mechanism can wear, the latch strike can become misaligned, or the door switch can fail electronically. Symptoms include the dishwasher appearing dead when you press start, the door not clicking firmly into position, or the cycle stopping mid-operation because the control senses the door has opened.

Door latch repairs on Bosch dishwashers are generally straightforward. The latch assembly is accessible from inside the door panel and can be replaced without major disassembly. However, if the door hinges have weakened — causing the door to sag and misalign with the latch — the hinges may need adjustment or replacement as well. Our technicians check both the latch and the hinge system to ensure a proper, lasting repair.

Why Bosch Requires Specific Expertise

Despite their reputation for reliability, Bosch dishwashers are engineered differently from American brands in ways that trip up general technicians. The diagnostic mode entry procedure, error code definitions, and component access points are all Bosch-specific. The flow-through heater system, the AquaStop anti-flood mechanism, and the multi-stage filtration system are all designs that a technician accustomed to working on GE or Whirlpool units may not fully understand.

At Sub-Zero Inland Empire, our experience with Bosch, Thermador (which shares Bosch's parent company BSH), and other European brands ensures accurate diagnosis and repair. We carry common Bosch parts and have expedited access to less common components.
